Best guitar pedals for Classic Rock - Boost Guitar Pedals

Best guitar pedals for Classic Rock

Here are our recommendations for the best guitar pedals for classic rock.

The distortions and fuzzes below capture the essence of classic rock, with plenty of gain but not so much as to creep into modern rock or metal territory.

Delay and reverbs should be added to the effects loop of your amp for perfect clarity, although you can get interesting effects running them into the front end.

Reverbs can add a sense of space to your sound, like dialling in how big the room is, but don't make it too big as your tone will become muddied.

STOMPNORTH Fishmoth Vintage Fuzztoner

£180.00

Silicon Fuzz Face with Extras...

Stompnorth's Fishmoth Vintage Fuzztoner is based on the classic silicon Fuzz Face circuit popularised by artists such as Jimi Hendrix and David Gilmour.

Built around expensive low-noise foil capacitors, this very useable fuzz takes the Fuzz Face circuit and beefs it up with some very welcome extra features.

A/B Toggle

The A/B toggle switches between bright and normal frequency response, enabling you to easily dial in a sound for either humbuckers or single-coils.

Bias

The Bias control enables you to adjust the response of the pedal, from a gated, dying battery character when turned anti-clockwise, to regular at around 12 'o'clock, and full sustain and body when turned clockwise.

If you love the Fuzz Face sound (and let's be honest, who doesn't?!), the Fishmoth Vintage Fuzztoner is the pedal for you.

Features:

  • Based on the silicon Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face
  • High quality, low-noise components
  • Additional features include Bias and tone response
  • Fuzz, Bias, Volume & A/B toggle Controls
  • Power: 9V power adaptor, centre-negative (not included)

ZANDER CIRCUITRY Surplus Elemental Overdriver

£149.00

For Those Who Prize "Feel"...

Zander Circuitry's Surplus Elemental Overdriver is a two-stage transistor boost/ overdrive pedal with the capability to achieve beautiful clean boost tones as well as complex distortion and even some fuzz.

The pedal features two foot-switchable channels with independent gain controls, perfect for on-the-fly switching. The switches support both momentary and latching switching, meaning that you can temporarily engage a channel by holding your foot down on either one of the switches.

Use the Response control to tweak the input and output capacitor value, rolling off the gain and low-end frequencies to achieve super-complex tones. It offers everything from a thinner, brighter character through to a grainy, spitty character. This pedal is incredibly reactive to your guitar's volume pot and playing dynamics, making it great for those of you who prize 'feel' above all else.

What's new?

This latest version of the Zander Circuitry Surplus Elemental Overdriver features a more compact footprint, beautiful knurled steel controls, and an upgrade from six to eight options on the signature clipping selector:

  • Germanium: A smooth, sweet sounding form of clipping, very ‘amp-like’ in its response.
  • Silicon: Louder, brighter and more aggressive sounding.
  • LED: Even louder, less saturated but very punchy.
  • Asymmetrical germanium: A more aggressive germanium sound.
  • Asymmetrical silicon: Beefing up the aggression of the silicon sound.
  • Asymmetrical LED: A more aggressive version of the LED sound.
  • MOSFET: Similar to the silicon setting but a bit sweeter, crunchier and a touch more saturated.
  • No  diodes: Loads of output but not much gain.

The pedal features two foot-switchable channels with independent gain controls, perfect for on-the-fly switching. The switches support both momentary and latching switching, meaning that you can temporarily engage a channel by holding your foot down on either one of the switches. You can also now engage the second footswitch from bypass, without having to activate the pedal first.

Features:

  • Updated version of Surplus Elemental Overdriver for 2021
  • Top-mounted jacks
  • Level 1, Level 2, Gain 1, Gain 2, Tone, Response, Channel 2 & Diode Selector Controls
  • Power: 9V power adaptor, centre-negative (not included).
  • Current draw: 100mA

FORMULA B Fuzz Rangers

£175.00

Legendary Boost & Fuzz In One Pedal!

The Formula B Fuzz Rangers takes two iconic circuits and encloses them in a beautifully finished chassis, with vintage-style controls. With the option to run the Fuzz or Boost independently, it's an incredibly flexible pedal for your pedalboard, but where it gets interesting is that there's a toggle to set the direction of the signal. You can choose whether to run the Boost into the Fuzz, or vice-versa. The results differ dramatically...

Fuzz

The Fuzz circuit is based on the silicon Fuzz Face, using a pair of NOS military-spec BC108 transistors and carbon-layer resistors. It sounds great on its own, and reacts really nicely to your guitar's volume pot - as Fuzz Faces do. Running the Fuzz into the Boost gets you a clearer tone with plenty of gain to push your amp, showcasing all that lovely Fuzz Face breakup.

Boost

The Boost circuit is based on the Dallas Rangemaster Treble Booster, with silicon BC549 transistors to reduce compatibility problems (polarity, power etc) with the Fuzz circuit. Uniquely, there's a toggle switch to shift the Boost emphasis between Low, Mid and High frequencies, making it more flexible than a traditional Rangemaster. Running the Boost into the Fuzz saturates the input of the Fuzz Face and gets you a rich, warm, super-fuzzy character which responds well to how you set the EQ toggle.

More than simply for fans of Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, this pedal will serve you well with its vintage vibe and tonal flexibility.

Features:

  • Dual-channel pedal with independent Fuzz and Boost circuits.
  • NOS BC108 transistors and carbon-layer resistors on the Fuzz side.
  • Silicon-based Rangemaster circuit on the Boost side for greater compatibility with the Fuzz.
  • Effects Order toggle switch enables you to run the Fuzz into the Boost, or the Boost into the Fuzz when both channels are activated.
  • EQ toggle allows you to emphasise Low, Mid or High frequencies on the Boost side.
  • Handmade in Todi, Italy
  • Fuzz, Level, Boost, EQ toggle & Effects Order toggle controls
  • Power: 9V power supply, centre-negative (not included)
  • Current draw: 10mA

FORMULA B Super Plexi V

£160.00

The Essence of the '60s...

If you hadn't guessed it already, the Formula B Super Plexi V (for "Vertical" - they also do a horizontal version) is based on the Marshall JTM45 "Plexi", with an additional Boost channel thrown in for good measure, capturing the sound of many legendary players from the 1960s onwards.

Effects Order

The Super Plexi V uses a rare Fairchild J201 MOSFET for beautifully warm, responsive tube-like tone. Like the Formula B Fuzz Rangers, there's a toggle to set whether the Boost comes before or after, giving you extra control of your sound - and more options to set your tone on fire!

Boost

The Boost channel on its own gives you plenty of gain to push your amp onto overdrive, but this pedal really comes alive when you partner it with the Plexi channel. Run the Boost before the Plexi for lovely saturation and density; run the Boost after the Plexi to increase the volume and gun your amp's power tubes.

Features:

  • Dual channel "Marshall-in-a-box" pedal with independent Boost and Plexi channels
  • Featuring a rare Fairchild J201 MOSFET for responsive tube-like tone
  • Effects Order toggle switch enables you to run the Boost into the Plexi, or the Plexi into the Boost when both channels are activated
  • Handmade in Todi, Italy
  • Level, Gain, Tone, Boost & Effects Order toggle controls
  • Power: 9V power supply, centre-negative (not included)
  • Current draw: 10mA
