When you think of Fuzz Face pedals, Jimi Hendrix undoubtedly springs to mind. And for good reason - Hendrix took the Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face's now-famous "smiley face" to stratospheric levels of blues fuzz rock, helped of course by the mods done to the circuit by Roger Mayer.
The Fuzz Face circuit originally used germanium transistors but soon switched to the more reliable and cheaper to produce silicon, which gave the fuzz a more aggressive sound. In both guises its a simple circuit known for its responsiveness to the guitar's volume pot, getting very spitty and organic in certain positions.
Famous users of the Fuzz Face include Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmour and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
