May is a strange month in the music industry. On the surface, it can feel like a quiet month: many of the Q1 industry events have come to a close, and while bands are often in full swing on tour, May is a time for change.
During the month, we start preparing ourselves for the biggest shift in the live music calendar... festival season!
Here's a round up of some interesting events to seek out this May:
The Great Escape is one of the UK's most important festival. This isn't a festival about the biggest names on the planet, this is a festival about the next generation of bands.
Over the course of 4 days, over 450 bands will take to the stage in 30+ venues across Brighton for this festival that showcases the best up and coming talent in the country.
Alongside this incredible line up of fresh talent you'll also find a few big names on the bill including Brighton's very own, The Kooks, and Canadian electro rock queen Peaches.
This festival is a great opportunity to network with some industry professionals and catch some amazing homegrown talent. The bands you see here are the festival headliners of tomorrow.
If you’re after something that feels like Glastonbury shrunk down to a more intimate size, then Shindig might be the festival for you.
Set in the arboretum of Charlton Park Estate, Shindig Festival is one of the UK’s most beloved boutique festivals. With 7 stages and a dedicated kids' area, it's family-friendly by design but never boring for those who just want great music and a proper weekend away.
Across four days you’ll find live acts and headline DJs spread over multiple stages, plus workshops, art installations, healing spaces, kids’ areas, woodland dancefloors and plenty of room to breathe.
The lineup blends Indie, Electronic, soulful House and eclectic live sets – think artists including Bob Vylan, Fat Dog, Luke Una, DJ Paulette and Danny Howells, shaping a weekend that’s as chill as it is lively.
Shindig is the kind of festival where you can spend one night dancing under the trees and the next morning sipping coffee before a yoga session. If you want a more relaxed, community-led way to kick off festival season without losing any of the magic, Shindig is exactly what May should feel like.
Slam Dunk Festival is the living embodiment of youth, regardless of your age. This is a two day festival split between Hatfield (Slam Dunk South) and Leeds (Slam Dunk North). Over the two days, you will see some of the best punk, pop punk, emo and metal bands around.
Expect blistering sets from Good Charlotte, Knocked Loose, Taking Back Sunday, Bury Tomorrow and many, many more.
Grab your skinny jeans and slip on Vans and get in the pit, you're never too old to be a little emo!
Lovebox is back with a new chapter at Dreamland Margate, bringing its signature mix of live music, electronic sets and festival fun to the seaside.
This isn’t your typical camping festival – it’s more about catching the train and making a weekend out of it.
With headliners like Rudimental and Scissor Sisters leading the charge – along with DJ sets from Groove Armada and Mike Skinner – Lovebox blends dance floors with live stages across genres: R&B, Hip-Hop, Indie, Electronic, and everything in between.
Expect big crowds, late nights, and some memorable off-stage moments that make this one of London’s most talked-about festival weekends.
If you’re looking for a stylish, high-energy way to kick off your summer, Lovebox is exactly where you want to be!
May is a busy time for touring bands. Many bands get their final headline run finished prior to festival season kicking off, so this month sometimes feels a little hectic for the avid gig-goer. Here are some bands to watch out for this May:
